Determining the Top Insurance Companies

Elisabeth Myrick

Determining which insurance company is the best for you and your family to invest with can be a very difficult decision. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish which is the best insurance provider to meet your needs, but there are a few ways to separate the top insurance agents to narrow down your search. However, choosing the best insurance company is a very subjective decision relative to each person.

There are several independent agencies that specialize in insurance company ratings, for example: Best’s, Fitch, Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s Investors Service. These groups each provide important insurance information to consumers and report the financial viability of companies.

The financial viability rating is one of the most important for a consumer to review, as it indicates the company’s ability to pay out claims. While you are paying an affordable insurance premium now, the policy provides coverage for damage or problems that may arise in the future. This is why the financial viability of the carrier is so important. You do not want to pay on a policy and then 15 years from the time you purchased the policy, need to file a claim and the company is no longer able to pay out your money. The best insurance companies will still be viable many years in the future; it just takes research and a little time to determine what those companies are, before you take out a policy.

The ratings provided by the independent agencies, Best’s, Fitch, S&P, etc. apply the same, relatively rigorous and comprehensive standards to each insurance company to provide benchmarks for consumers to evaluate insurance agents against. These agencies also apply their standards to insurance companies throughout the world, not just in America.

Basically, these agencies serve as a type of insurance underwriter for the insurance company. Similarly to how insurance underwriters evaluate consumers for their financial stability and assess their level of risk to the insurance company, these agencies also assess the risk, exposures, and financials of the insurance company itself to determine its stability. They are examining whether the company is a good investment, just as insurance underwriters look at various aspects of consumers to determine if they are a good investment and a good potential client for the insurance agency.

Based on the underwriting concept, it is important to remember that while these ratings are independent evaluations, they are still the agency’s opinion, based usually on quantitative and qualitative evaluation of financial records, operating performance and their business profile, they are still an opinion. Consumers should use these recommendations to make a list of top insurance companies, and then research those companies and their performance in their local area before making a final decision.

By visiting each of these independent insurance company agencies Web site, you can easily access the information on the best insurance companies in the market. Try to look at more than one of the ratings to get a better idea of how each insurance company rates with each agency. Just because an insurance company tops the list with one agency does not mean the other agencies will rank them similarly.

Meeting with your local insurance representative is an important step in the decision making process as well. If all elements are equal with the insurance company as a whole, your decision on choosing which the top insurance company is for you may come down to the service you will receive from your local agent. Make sure to schedule meetings or call the local offices to determine how you will be treated in the future.
